Make a simple sugar cookie dough, then split it into portions and tint with Halloween colors. Roll out the dough, cut into themed shapes, and bake until the edges are golden. After cooling, finish with icing and decorations.

Ingredients

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Electric mixer
  • Rolling pin
  • Cookie cutters
  • Baking sheets
  • Parchment paper

Directions

  1. Set the oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare baking sheets by covering them with parchment paper.
  2. In a big mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until the mixture becomes pale and airy.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract and continue beating until everything is thoroughly incorporated.
  4. In another bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and salt using a whisk.
  5. Slowly pour the dry mix into the wet mix while stirring, just until no streaks of flour remain.
  6. Separate the dough into several sections. Tint each section with food coloring to achieve desired Halloween colors like orange, black, or green.
  7. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to a thickness of about 1/4 inch. Press Halloween-shaped cookie cutters into the dough to create fun shapes.
  8. Arrange the cut-out cookies on the lined baking sheets, leaving around 2 inches of space between each one.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes, until the edges just start to turn golden. Be careful not to overbake.
  10. Let the cookies cool entirely on the baking sheet before you start decorating with icing and sprinkles.
