Transform your space into a creepy psychiatric institution. Include a morgue, electric chair, and collections from a deranged doctor. Guests can come as doctors, nurses, or patients. Highlight the Asylum Dessert Table with eerie treats. Free printable signs and labels help set the insane scene.

About this

A detailed account of a dark Asylum-themed Halloween party built around a morgue, an electric chair and a cast of mad doctors, nurses and chained patients. The host walks through the asylum set dressing, the Asylum Dessert Table of themed sweets and the urine specimen cocktails served to adults. A full set of free downloadable Asylum printables for signs, labels and table tents is also listed.

Tips

  • The circles used on the asylum cupcakes are available as part of the free printable download.
  • A tutorial for making the electric chair can be viewed on the site.
  • This was a fun party to create but did take time collecting the many small bits and pieces.

The plan

  1. Plan the party around a dark asylum theme featuring the morgue, electric chair and collections from a crazy psychiatric doctor, nurses and patients
  2. Allow plenty of time to collect the many small bits and pieces needed for the set dressing
  3. Build the morgue and electric chair (a separate electric chair tutorial is available on the site)
  4. Prepare an Asylum Dessert Table styled as an old asylum kitchen
  5. Download and print the free Asylum printables for signage and labels
  6. Set up an office for the mad doctor and an admissions area at the door

Decoration ideas

  • Morgue fashioned from an existing cupboard, with foil covered sliding racks for the bodies
  • Black velvet draped so only the feet of the bodies were visible
  • Toe tags attached to the bodies as a final touch
  • Electric chair set up with sounds and flash strobe lighting
  • Large assortment of bottled organs in both vintage and modern display jars
  • Stone walls to suggest an asylum interior
  • Skeletons still chained in their chairs
  • Old asylum kitchen complete with vintage bedpans
  • Patients chained in place throughout the asylum
  • Asylum kitchen with two blood spattered children making mince meat from various body parts and organs
  • Admissions Nurse 'Nurse Betty' as an imposing feature at the door
  • Set of skulls displayed to show levels of mental impairment from Lunatics to imbeciles
  • Lots of furs and dark fabrics used to transform the house into an asylum
  • Mad doctor's office with a vintage desk, chair and lots of old bottles and books
  • Old printed photos of asylums used to decorate the doctor's desk
  • Asylum Dessert Table styled to look like an old asylum kitchen with old vintage kitchen pieces, including crystal and leather bottles and a vintage bed pan right under the table
  • Light refreshments served on a mortuary table and displayed with mortuary tools
  • Champagne glasses decorated with the Asylum Wine Glass Circles

Food & drink

  • Lunatic Cake pops made as Mad Doctors, with capes fashioned from small and large foil patty pan papers
  • Mortuary Saw Cookies dripping with blood
  • Cup cakes featuring details of old abandoned and condemned asylums
  • Layered candy corn jelly topped with whipped cream, served in cups
  • Blue eyeball punch to round out the dessert table
  • Urine specimen cocktails for adults, a mix of different clear spirits made with orange juice and different amounts of raspberry cordial to cause colour variation in the samples
  • Light refreshments served on the mortuary table

Activities

  • Guests could experience the electric chair, which worked really well with sounds and flash strobe lighting
  • Patients and characters chained in place around the asylum provided the interactive scene
  • Admissions Nurse 'Nurse Betty' greeted guests at the door
