This project guides you through converting a basic plastic bin into a weathered, biohazard-themed drink holder. By layering grey, fluorescent green, and glow-in-the-dark paints over a distressed surface, you create a realistic toxic barrel. The addition of expanding foam, red splatter, and internal green tubs on black paper bases results in a functional and atmospheric prop perfect for an adult Halloween party.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Remove the metal handles from the plastic bin.
  2. Gently rub the surface with sandpaper to roughen the finish and remove the manufacturer's label.
  3. Apply a thin, irregular coat of grey paint using a spray can.
  4. After the grey layer dries, sand the surface again to create a worn, weathered look.
  5. Design your symbol in a word processor, print it out, and carefully cut out the negative space with a craft knife, keeping the cut-out pieces for later use.
  6. Reattach the original handles to the sides of the bin to act as stabilizers that prevent it from tipping over.
  7. Apply a thick, heavy coat of fluorescent green spray paint and allow it to dry completely.
  8. Follow with a light misting of olive green paint and let it dry.
  9. Spray the entire surface with glow-in-the-dark paint, let it dry, and then peel away the stencil.
  10. Splatter the finished bin with red spray paint for a final toxic effect.
  11. Tuck strips of parchment paper along the inner rim and secure them with clothespins.
  12. Apply expanding foam around the top edge and down the exterior sides of the container.
  13. Once the foam hardens, remove the paper liner and paint the new texture using the same grey, fluorescent green, and glow-in-the-dark sequence used on the symbol.
  14. Insert green plastic tubs into the bin, resting them on boxes wrapped in black paper to form a functional beverage holder.
  15. Toss glow sticks into both the drink containers and the main bin to complete the eerie atmosphere.
