About this

A TODAY article in which senior entertainment editor Elena Nicolaou has her Halloween candy read by Jennifer Billock, a self-proclaimed cheese reader and food fortune teller. Billock explains how she reads fortunes from nearly any food, and interprets Nicolaou's Twix and Butterfinger to predict a hidden secret and an upcoming change. The piece closes with the reading's results and Billock's response to skeptics.

From the original

Jennifer Billock, a self-described cheese reader, uses food as a divination tool. She started with tea leaf reading, called tasseography, as a teenager and now reads nearly any food, including croissants, cookies, wedge salad, bread, crackers and oatmeal. Her method is to watch how someone handles the food and what changes through touch or bite — leaving it whole, biting it, or breaking it. She believes food is a powerful divination medium because it is transformational, citing cooking changing ingredients and milk becoming cheese. She has read for individuals, groups and brands, including an NFL project predicting the destiny of 21 teams using Snickers bites, but she does not read for herself. For this article, Elena Nicolaou chose Twix and Butterfinger, tore the Twix apart and bit the Butterfinger, assigning past and future roles. From the torn Twix, Billock said Nicolaou hides something from the outside world. From the crumbled Butterfinger, she predicted a decision and a life change, seeing symbols including a little alien head for entering new territory and eyes for someone watching over her. Billock tells skeptics that even if she is wrong, you still get to eat something delicious.
