black and white Halloween decorations

These five easy DIY projects transform ordinary items into charming Halloween decor. From a marbled cheesecloth tablecloth to ghostly cake toppers and milk bottles, plus a simple sticker garland and mini balloon ghosts, everything is sweet and spook-free. Perfect for a family-friendly Halloween party.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Unfold the cheesecloth and spread it on newspaper. Following the can's instructions, spray it lightly with black marble spray paint. The cheesecloth will stick to the newspaper, so gently peel it off right after spraying. Lay it back on the newspaper to dry—it won't stick again. If your table isn't white, place a white tablecloth underneath for the best effect.
  2. Cut your popsicle sticks into various heights: tall, medium, and short (ghosts come in all sizes!). Paint them white, then use a black marker to draw eyes and a mouth. Attach a cocktail stick to the back of each with tape, and insert them into your cake.
  3. Stick round black stickers onto a glass milk bottle for eyes. Cut a square-ish piece of cheesecloth and drape it over the bottle. Cut a thin strip of cheesecloth and tie it around the bottle's neck to secure the drape. Gently push a straw through the cheesecloth. For a whiter look, serve milk in the bottles or use a double layer of cheesecloth.
  4. Fold each round black label sticker in half to create a crease. Peel off the backing, place the sticker under baker's twine along the crease, and fold over so it sticks. Repeat with more stickers until your garland reaches the desired length.
  5. Blow up mini balloons and attach googly eyes to them. I used them as a backdrop for the Halloween table, but they're versatile—turn them into cupcake toppers, add to garlands, or fill with helium for floating decorations.
