This tutorial guides you through creating a striking Queen of Hearts costume makeup. From a white heart mask and dramatic black eyes to red lips and brows, each step builds a regal, card-inspired look that will steal the show at any Halloween party.

Directions

  1. Apply your foundation, then use a shimmery bronzer to contour the hollows of your cheeks, temples, and jawline (Wet N Wild Ticket to Brazil, $6).
  2. Use a white eyeliner pencil to draw a heart shape that narrows near the cheek hollows.
  3. Fill the heart with white cream makeup (like Ben Nye Creme Color in White, $8) using a beauty sponge. As you move down your face, use less product so it fades into your skin tone. The effect should resemble a mask.
  4. To ensure longevity, set the cream makeup with a colorless setting powder (Natural Set Colorless Face Powder, $8) using a fluffy brush. Tap the powder onto the skin rather than sweeping to avoid smudging.
  5. Using black gel liner and a fine synthetic brush, line your entire eyes, making the line thicker at the outer corners for dramatic effect.
  6. Apply a bold black eyeshadow to the crease with a fluffy blending brush. Keep the inner corner line sharp and less blended for added drama.
  7. Soften the outer edge of the black shadow by blending a neutral, lighter shade onto its border.
  8. Curl your lashes and apply mascara to prepare them for false lashes.
  9. Trim a pair of feathered upper false lashes to fit your eyes. Place them under your lower lashes at the outer corners to mimic card symbols (Ardel Accent Lashes, $10, available at drugstores).
  10. Using the same synthetic brush and black gel liner, paint small hearts just beneath your eyes.
  11. To make the white heart pop, apply a reddish-orange shadow along its top edge on the forehead and bottom edge at the cheekbones, blending into your skin.
  12. Fill in your eyebrows with the same reddish-orange shadow using a slanted eyebrow brush.
  13. Line your lips with bright red and fill with red lipstick (e.g., Nars in Jungle Red, $26).
  14. Add highlights to the heart using a flat brush and a shimmering white shadow (like MAC Dazzleshadow in It's All About Shine, $23).
  15. Pin your hair back to create a fluffy silhouette on each side, then spray with temporary red hair color.
