These easy Halloween brownies are transformed into mummies with a simple buttercream frosting and candy eyes. The fudgy brownies are baked in a 9x13 pan, cut into 12 pieces, then decorated with piped frosting strips and eyes. Perfect for a fun, kid-friendly dessert.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Set the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish using spray or shortening, and line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a big bowl, whisk together both sugars, flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Set this dry mix aside.
  3. In another bowl, beat the melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract together.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  5. Spread the batter evenly in the pan. Bake for 30 minutes, until a knife inserted in the center comes out almost clean—avoid overbaking.
  6. Allow the brownies to cool entirely before moving on.
  7. Beat the softened butter until creamy. Add the vanilla and salt, and mix until combined.
  8. Gradually add the confectioners' sugar, a little at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  9. Turn the mixer to high and beat for 1 minute—the mixture will be thick and crumbly. Reduce to low speed and slowly pour in half the milk, beating until smooth.
  10. Add the rest of the powdered sugar and milk alternately, beating until smooth after each addition.
  11. Once all ingredients are mixed, check the frosting's thickness. Adjust by adding more milk to thin or more sugar to thicken.
  12. Attach a coupler and a flat tip to a large piping bag, then fill it with the frosting, trying to avoid air bubbles.
  13. Using the parchment paper, lift the whole brownie slab out of the pan. Support it carefully to prevent cracking, and transfer to a cutting board.
  14. With a sharp knife, slice the brownie slab into 12 rectangles, making 3 cuts lengthwise and 4 cuts crosswise.
  15. Using the flat side of the piping tip, pipe strips of frosting at random angles over each brownie. Press two candy eyes onto each to create mummy faces.
