This Halloween Brownie Graveyard recipe starts with a rich, fudgy brownie base, then transforms it into a creepy scene. You'll cut graves into the brownie, add crumbled 'soil', skeleton bones, and tombstone cookies, and finish with piped green frosting grass.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Set your oven to 325°F (165°C).
  2. Butter a 9x13-inch (23x33 cm) glass baking dish and line it with parchment paper.
  3. In a double boiler or a heatproof bowl set over a pot of simmering water, gently heat the butter and semi-sweet chocolate until fully melted, stirring occasionally. Once melted, turn off the heat but keep the bowl over the water to stay warm.
  4. Stir the granulated sugar into the warm butter and chocolate mixture.
  5. In another bowl, lightly beat the eggs and vanilla together. Pour this into the chocolate mixture and stir until well combined. Then fold in the flour and baking powder until no dry streaks remain. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan using a spatula.
  6. Bake for 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the brownie cool completely in the pan, then lift it out using the parchment paper.
  8. In a small bowl, mix the confectioners sugar with milk until you have a smooth icing.
  9. Add black food coloring very gradually—I used a toothpick to dab just a tiny amount—until the icing turns a stone grey shade.
  10. Spread the grey icing over the oval cookies and let them dry on a cooling rack.
  11. Pour the melted white chocolate into the skeleton bone candy mold, then refrigerate until firm. Pop the bones out once set.
  12. Place the cooled brownie on a cutting board.
  13. Cut three grave shapes into the brownie, each about 2 1/4 by 5 inches (6 x 13 cm), spacing them evenly apart.
  14. Use a fork to rake out the cut brownie pieces so they crumble like soil; collect the crumbs in a bowl. Then mound the 'soil' back into the grave hollows. Arrange the skeleton bones in and around the graves.
  15. With a sharp knife, cut out a small section at the head of each grave and insert the grey cookies into those slots.
  16. In a mixing bowl, stir a few drops of green food coloring into the store-bought vanilla frosting until you get the desired grass color.
  17. Load the green frosting into a piping bag fitted with tip 233, then pipe 'grass' around the graves.
