Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Electric mixer
  • Rolling pin
  • Cookie cutters
  • Baking sheet
  • Wire rack

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with granulated sugar until the mixture becomes pale and fluffy.
  2. Add the egg and vanilla extract and beat thoroughly until fully incorporated.
  3. In another bowl, whisk the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt together.
  4. Slowly incorporate the dry mixture into the wet mixture, stirring just until a dough comes together.
  5. Split the dough into three equal parts. Color one part orange, another black, and the third green with food coloring.
  6. On a lightly floured counter, roll each colored dough to a thickness of roughly 1/4 inch.
  7. Use Halloween-shape cookie cutters like pumpkins, ghosts, or bats to cut out cookies from each dough.
  8. Arrange the cut cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  9. Bake in a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven for 8 to 10 minutes, until the edges just start to turn golden.
  10. Let the cookies cool entirely on a wire rack.
  11. Use icing and sprinkles to decorate the cookies however you like.
