This recipe guides you through creating Halloween-themed popcorn balls using Jello gelatin, corn syrup, and sugar. The process involves coating popped popcorn with a boiled syrup mixture, shaping the cooled portions into balls, and allowing them to set completely before serving or storing.
Ingredients
Directions
- Prepare your popcorn using an air popper or microwave, aiming for approximately nine cups. Transfer the popped corn to a large mixing bowl. For the best visual effect, choose plain white kernels without butter or salt, and be sure to remove any unpopped pieces to prevent dental mishaps.
- In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the white sugar, corn syrup, and the contents of the Jello box. Place the pan over medium heat and whisk continuously until the sugar and gelatin have completely dissolved. Allow the mixture to reach a boil, which should take roughly four to five minutes.
- Slowly drizzle the hot syrup over the popcorn in the bowl. Using a sturdy wooden spoon, toss and stir the corn until every piece is thoroughly coated. Exercise extreme caution as the syrup is scalding hot.
- Continue stirring the coated popcorn as it begins to cool. Wait until the mixture is cool enough to handle safely before proceeding to the next stage.
- Line your work surface with wax paper and apply a light coating of non-stick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Lightly spray two large metal spoons with cooking spray. Scoop portions of the popcorn mixture onto the prepared wax paper, placing about three scoops at a time to allow them to cool further.
- Dampen your hands with water or spray them with cooking spray to prevent the sticky syrup from adhering to your skin. Pick up a cooled portion of the popcorn and shape it into a round ball.
- Squeeze the ball firmly to ensure it holds its shape, then return it to the wax paper to finish cooling completely.
- Continue shaping the remaining popcorn mixture into balls, placing each one on the wax paper as you go.
- Allow all the popcorn balls to cool thoroughly before serving. For storage, keep them in an airtight container for up to three days, or wrap each ball individually in plastic wrap.
