This DIY project creates a witch crash-landing decoration using a large cauldron, pool noodles, PVC pipe, and striped tights. The steps guide you through building the legs, attaching shoes, and filling the cauldron with sand and moss, then adding creepy accessories for a haunting outdoor scene.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Use a screwdriver or similar tool to poke two holes in the bottom of the cauldron.
  2. Choose the final location for the cauldron, then hammer the two pieces of rebar into the ground through the holes.
  3. Cut two sections of pipe insulation each about 6 to 8 inches long, and slide one onto each rebar inside the cauldron.
  4. Cut the PVC pipe into two 3-foot-1-inch lengths. Test that each slides onto a rebar and into the insulation, then remove them to build the legs.
  5. Slice the pool noodle in half crosswise to create two legs; each half will be about 29 inches long, since a standard noodle is roughly 58 inches.
  6. Force a pool noodle half onto each PVC pipe, leaving about 2 inches of PVC exposed at one end. This fit will be tight. Cover any rough PVC edges with duct tape.
  7. Fill a pair of socks with polyfil stuffing, then check that they fit inside the shoes. Remove the shoes afterward.
  8. Slip the stuffed socks onto the exposed PVC ends to form the feet; the 2-inch PVC stub becomes the heel. Pull the sock top up over the pool noodle and secure it with duct tape all around.
  9. Slide a striped thigh high or tights leg over the sock, pool noodle, and PVC assembly, then tie it off at the top. Repeat for the other leg.
  10. Put the ruby slippers or witchy shoes onto each foot. Use a hot glue gun to attach the shoes securely all around.
  11. Insert the completed witch legs into the cauldron, sliding them down onto the rebar through the pipe insulation.
  12. Fill the cauldron about halfway with lightweight filler like old plastic bags or tarps, then add sand until it is 2/3 to 3/4 full.
  13. If you want a broom, stick it into the sand and tape it to the cauldron side to keep it upright.
  14. Cover everything with the entire bag of Spanish moss.
  15. Decorate the cauldron with Dollar Tree finds: place the skull, glow-in-the-dark snakes, and spiders inside; hot glue the spiders and skull to prevent wind damage.
  16. Slide the sign’s string down over the witch legs to secure it, and attach the crow to the sign by pushing the wires in its feet into the sign’s styrofoam.
