This recipe guides you through making three distinct Halloween-themed pancakes: a pumpkin with a witch’s hat, a spider with eight legs, and a mummy wrapped in whipped topping. You will prepare a basic batter, tint a portion orange, and use squeeze bottles to draw the shapes on a griddle. After flipping, you will decorate each pancake with candy sprinkles, Oreo cookie pieces, candy eyeballs, chocolate sauce, and honey to create the final festive look.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Add the egg, milk, and canola oil, then whisk everything until the mixture is completely smooth.
  2. Scoop a small amount of the batter into a separate small bowl. Mix in the orange food coloring gel until the color is even. Pour this tinted batter into a small squeeze bottle and set it aside.
  3. Place a funnel into the opening of a larger squeeze bottle. Pour the remaining plain batter through the funnel until the bottle is nearly full, leaving roughly one inch of headspace at the top to allow the baking powder to create air bubbles.
  4. Lightly coat a large griddle or skillet with nonstick cooking spray, unless you are using a pan that already has a nonstick surface. Warm the cooking surface over low to medium heat.
  5. To create the pumpkin shape, use the orange batter from the small bottle to draw a circle on the left side of the hot griddle, then fill in the outline. At the top of the circle, draw and fill in a witch’s hat shape.
  6. For the spider design, draw a circle in the upper middle section of the griddle and fill it in. Extend four legs from the right side of the circle and four legs from the left side, keeping the lines thick enough to avoid breaking when flipped.
  7. On the lower right side of the griddle, use the batter to outline and fill in the shape of a mummy.
  8. Once the undersides of the pancakes turn a light golden color, use a long spatula to carefully flip each one over.
  9. For the pumpkin, place it face-up as it was drawn. Spread a thin layer of chocolate sauce over the hat area using the back of a small spoon, then sprinkle black candy sprinkles on top. Lightly brush honey over the orange pumpkin body and add orange candy sprinkles. Cut the Oreo cookies into pieces to create eyes, a nose, and a smile. Add a dot of chocolate sauce to the back of each cookie piece and press them onto the pancake to form the face.
  10. For the mummy, flip it so the cooked side faces up. Place the candy eyeballs on top. Pipe lines of Cool Whip topping across the mummy, leaving gaps between the lines and covering the eyes.
  11. For the spider, flip it to face up. Spread chocolate sauce over the entire spider shape using the back of a small spoon. Cover with chocolate sprinkles and place two candy eyeballs on top to complete the face.
  12. Serve the pancakes while they are still warm.
