Directions

  1. Start by measuring your pet's neck circumference. Men's dress shirts typically have collars starting at 14 inches, so if your dog is small, consider using a child's shirt instead.
  2. Detach the shirt collar by cutting close to the seam where it connects to the body. Then, measure 1 inch from the cuff seam, mark it, and cut off the cuffs along with that extra inch of fabric.
  3. Fold the excess fabric from the cuff edge under by 1/2 inch and press with a hot iron. Fold it again toward the back of the cuff and press. Pin the fold, then sew along the front over the original stitches using matching thread for a neat finish. Remove pins and any loose threads. Repeat for the second cuff, then remove any buttons from both cuffs.
  4. Hand-sew a button over each buttonhole on the cuffs. Cut two 1-inch pieces of hook-and-loop tape, and sew one side to the back of each buttonhole, attaching only to the back fabric layer. Wrap the cuff around your pet's leg where a wrist would be and mark the spot for the other half of the tape. Hand-sew that piece where marked. You can trim any extra fabric; be sure to stitch the cut edge closed if you do. Alternatively, you may simply fold the cuff over and sew the fold in place.
