Turn a glass bowl into a paper mache candy bowl perfect for Halloween. After building up layers of paper and Mod Podge, paint it black and red, then add foam tombstones and a tree. Finish with a handmade spider and a painted bird for a eerie effect.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Invert the glass bowl that will act as the mold and wrap its exterior with aluminum foil. Tuck any leftover foil inside the bowl.
  2. Rip the paper bags or kraft paper into roughly 2- to 3-inch pieces.
  3. Combine four parts Mod Podge with one part water in a bowl, stirring with a stick. Dip each paper piece into the mixture and place onto the foil-coated bowl, overlapping the pieces to fully cover the surface. Keep the bowl upside down on a can so it can be rotated easily. Continue until three to four layers of paper cover the entire outside of the bowl.
  4. Let the bowl dry for a full 24 hours.
  5. Once dry, carefully separate the foil from inside the glass bowl to release the paper shell. Then gently remove the foil from the paper shell.
  6. Paint the paper bowl: black on the exterior and red on the interior. Allow the paint to dry.
  7. Use a craft knife to cut a spooky tree and three tombstone shapes from black craft foam. If using templates, transfer the designs to the foam with light transfer paper, securing the paper with blue painter's tape. Attach the foam shapes to the bowl's exterior with foam glue, using clothespins to hold them in place while the glue sets for 24 hours.
  8. For the spider, thread black embroidery floss through a small black pompom. Coat the floss "legs" with glue to stiffen them. Attach a white thread to the spider and hang it from the tree.
  9. Paint a small bird figurine black with craft paint and glue it onto the tree. If the tree starts to lean, support it with a bamboo skewer painted black and glued to both the back of the tree and the top of the bowl.
