Directions

  1. Start by cutting a 16-by-30-inch rectangle from canvas or duck cloth. Fold it in half width-wise so the shorter sides meet, creating an almost square. Sew up both open sides of the folded fabric, leaving the folded edge and the bottom open. Then cut a straight slit up the center of one side to form the front opening. For the neck, snip a small half-circle at the center of the folded edge. Cut armholes from the two stitched sides. Hem the bottom and center edges by folding them under and stitching. Make two pockets from 5x4-inch rectangles—hem the edges and sew them onto the vest.
  2. Give two toilet paper rolls a coat of black or dark gray paint and let them dry completely. Hot-glue the rolls together side by side to form the binoculars' bridge. Punch holes on the left and right sides of the rolled paper, then tie a length of jute twine through them so the binoculars can hang around your child's neck.
  3. From faux leather, cut a 9-by-20-inch rectangle. Fold the bottom edge up about 7 inches and hot-glue the sides to form a pouch. Fold the top edge down to create a flap, then snip off the two corners at an angle for a shaped look. Cut a 1- to 2-inch-wide strip of faux leather for the strap. Secure one end inside the satchel with hot glue to make a cross-body strap.
