About this

This safety tip explains the proper handling and storage of dry ice, including the use of gloves, ventilation, and never sealing it in airtight containers. It also covers how to create spooky fog effects without risking injury or carbon dioxide buildup.

Tips

  • Use a hammer, screwdriver or chisel, tongs, and a tray with a rim for safe handling.
  • Wear safety goggles (recommended).
  • Break the block of dry ice into workable pieces on a tray with a rim to stop pieces from scattering.
  • Keep broken pieces in the freezer until ready to use.
  • Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide and converts into gas as it breaks down.
  • Contact with dry ice causes burns within seconds; it is much colder than water ice.
  • Carbon dioxide gas is heavier than air and reduces available oxygen; use only in a well-ventilated area.
  • Keep pets safely away from the area.
  • Cover yourself appropriately with long sleeves and long pants before handling.
  • NEVER touch dry ice with bare hands; always use tongs.
  • NEVER ingest dry ice or let it touch your lips or the interior of your mouth.
