Savory Moments: Spooky chocolate chip spider cookies
PHOTO · SAVORYMOMENTSBLOG.BLOGSPOT.COM

These spooky chocolate chip spider cookies start with a soft, chewy base and get a creepy makeover. A single chocolate chip pressed into each baked cookie becomes the body, and melted chocolate drawn into eight legs completes the spider effect. They're perfect for Halloween parties or a fun baking project with kids.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Heat your oven to 350°F and cover two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together 1-3/4 cup flour, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter (room temperature), 1/2 cup granulated sugar, and 1/2 cup light brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in 1 large egg and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Once combined, add the dry ingredients and mix until just incorporated. Fold in 1/2 cup of the bittersweet chocolate chips.
  4. Scoop about a tablespoon of dough, roll into balls, and place them 2 inches apart on the prepared sheets. Gently press one extra chocolate chip (from the reserve) into the top of each ball, pointed side down, varying the position (centered or off-center).
  5. Bake for 10–12 minutes, until the edges and bottoms are just beginning to turn golden. Transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.
  6. In a small pan, melt the remaining 1/4 cup of chocolate chips together with 1 teaspoon refined coconut oil (or canola), stirring often. Using a toothpick, carefully draw eight legs extending from the pressed chip on each cookie.
  7. Let the chocolate set completely, then store the spider cookies in an airtight container.
