This Halloween project uses a wood sheet for the teeth and cardboard cake bases for the eyes. The teeth are painted with acrylic and spray paint for a bloody, blended look, while the eyes are colored with permanent markers and sealed with tape. Both are hung using existing lip and Command strips to avoid damage.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Sketch the desired design directly onto the 4'x8' wood sheet using a sharpie marker.
  2. Cut along the outline with a saw.
  3. Apply a thick, messy layer of acrylic paint as a base.
  4. Begin shaping the teeth on the paint, but leave some space at the top that will be hidden by the house when the piece is hung.
  5. Add a small amount of yellow paint around the gum area.
  6. Use brown spray paint now. To blend, apply brown spray paint one tooth at a time. Take a sponge and, since the acrylic paint is still wet, blend it smoothly.
  7. Add some red spray paint to the gums and blend further. Then add 'blood' on the teeth with more red spray paint.
  8. Finish with a light application of black spray paint around the edges.
  9. Position the wood using the existing lip inside the columns so no hooks or nails are needed.
  10. For the eyes, use cardboard cake bases. Trace objects onto the cardboard: a plastic plate for the eye outline, a spray paint can for the pupil, and a water jug for the eye color area.
  11. Color the eyes with permanent markers, using two different shades of green.
  12. Add some bloodshot veins for effect.
  13. Spray paint the edges of the cardboard eyes red and black.
  14. Seal both front and back with clear packing tape to protect the cardboard from outdoor weather.
  15. Attach the eyes to the house using Command strips to avoid damage.
