Irish Halloween traditions included many matchmaking games that girls played to predict their future husbands. Using items like lead, thread, rings, and cabbage, these rituals were both playful and superstitious. Each game offered a unique glimpse into what the next year might bring in love and life.

Directions

  1. Girls would melt lead in a tin box over small coals on the hearth. They'd grab an old key with a large ring handle, then toss the box through that ring into a basin of cold water to resolidify the lead. It was believed the lead would form strange shapes, and one girl would declare to another, "That is the boy you are to marry."
  2. A blindfolded participant would approach a table with three saucers: one filled with water, one holding a ring, and one with clay. Touching the water saucer first meant they'd sail to a new country before next Halloween. Finding the ring predicted marriage within the year, while touching the clay foretold death and burial before the next Halloween.
  3. A ring was baked into a cake each Halloween. The person who found the ring in their slice would be married within the following year.
  4. A girl would stand by an open window holding a spool of thread. She'd toss the spool outside while keeping one end in her hand. As she wound the thread back in, if any boy walked by before she finished, he would become her future husband.
  5. Another thread-based fortune used a lime kiln. After midnight on Halloween, drop a length of thread into the kiln. When you pulled it out, you'd supposedly see the image of your future spouse.
  6. On Halloween, place 26 small paper slips, each with a different letter of the alphabet, into a bucket of water and let them sit overnight. By morning, the letters forming your future spouse's name would float to the surface (so no repeated letters in a name, apparently).
  7. Sleeping with a leaf under your pillow on Halloween night would cause you to dream of the person you were destined to marry.
  8. After peeling an entire apple, a girl would toss the peel over her shoulder. The shape it formed on the floor would reveal the initials of her future husband.
  9. Hang a potato skin by the fire on Halloween, and the first man to enter the house afterward would become your husband. You'd hope it wasn't a relative!
  10. To end the night, the group would visit a cabbage patch and each pick a head of cabbage. A crooked stump foretold a husband with a hump, while a straight stump meant a tall, straight-backed spouse.
