Transform a gray hooded sweatshirt and sweatpants into a cute elephant costume with just a few felt pieces and a cardboard tube. The project includes oversized ears, a wrinkled trunk, and fun toe details, plus a Circus Peanuts candy nose for a sweet finishing touch. It's a simple, no-sew-friendly DIY that's perfect for a warm and playful Halloween look.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Start by making the ears: create paper patterns, then cut two large ear shapes from light gray felt and two smaller inner ear shapes from white felt. Attach each white inner ear to a light gray outer ear using topstitching or glue, aligning the straight edges and reversing one set. Fold the top of each ear down 2 inches, then pin the folded straight edges together. Position each ear on the hood 2 inches from the edge, with the folded edge at the top and the white side facing forward. Secure by stitching or gluing along the straight edge, catching the folded part in the seam.
  2. For the toes, cut six large and six small oval shapes from white felt. Use hot glue to attach three large toes to the front bottom hem of each sweatpants leg, and three small toes around the hem of each sweatshirt sleeve.
  3. To make the trunk, cut a cardboard paper towel tube to 9 inches long. Pinch one end together and glue it closed. Cut a 6x13-inch piece of light gray felt. Lay the tube on the felt so the open end aligns with the short side, then wrap the felt around the tube, hot gluing as you go and creating wrinkles. At the flattened end, glue the felt together to form a flap that will tuck inside the sweatshirt neck. Apply a line of hot glue around the edge of the open tube end and press it onto a piece of dark gray felt. Let it dry, then trim away the excess felt around the tube end.
  4. Attach the trunk by sewing or gluing the flap inside the front neckline of the sweatshirt. Finally, hot glue a Circus Peanuts candy to the dark gray felt at the end of the trunk for a charming finishing touch.
