About this

Harvest pumpkins when the rind is hard, the color is fully developed, and the stem begins to dry. Use a sharp knife or pruners to cut the stem, leaving a few inches attached. Avoid frost damage by harvesting before the first freeze. Handle pumpkins gently to prevent bruising.

Tips

  • Check that the pumpkin is fully colored; the rind should be firm and not easily pierced by a fingernail.
  • Check the vine and stem: if the vine starts to dry and pull away from the stem, and the stem shrivels, it's a sign of readiness.
  • Harvest on a dry, sunny day. Wear gloves and use hand pruners or a sharp knife to cut the vine, leaving at least a few inches of stem.
  • Never carry a pumpkin by its stem, as this can cause the stem to pull away and lead to spoilage.
  • If a hard frost threatens and the pumpkin is only partially colored, harvest it anyway because frost harms pumpkins.
  • Remove the vine after harvesting all pumpkins, especially if leaves show disease; do not compost diseased leaves.
