Turn a basic black witch costume into a tattered, layered masterpiece with dyed cheesecloth and a few simple steps.
Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at womansday.com.
This DIY costume uses cheesecloth dyed in black, purple, and blue to create a ragged, floating look. You'll cut, shred, and glue the fabric onto a store-bought witch dress and hat, then finish with a fabric belt.

Directions
- Combine the dyes according to the package directions. Use two packages of cheesecloth for each dye color (black, purple, blue) and let them dry completely.
- From any color, cut a 36 by 6 inch strip to serve as a belt. Cut the remaining cheesecloth into irregular large pieces, then slash the edges and pull threads to create a shredded look. Put on the costume, drape the cheesecloth over your shoulders in layered, mixed colors, and pin it in place.
- Take off the costume and use a hot-glue gun to permanently attach the cheesecloth so it flows freely from the shoulders. Also glue extra cheesecloth strips onto the witch hat.
- Put the costume back on along with the hat, and tie the reserved belt around your hip.
