Party · GamesNo. 5993 · The 2026 edition
Games that work in a dark backyard.
Seven after-sunset games that need nothing but the dark itself, a few flashlights, and things you already bought for the party.
Daylight party games embarrass everyone over nine. Darkness fixes that: it hides self-consciousness, doubles suspense, and turns a plain lawn into terrain. House rules for all of these: define the boundary before dark, one adult holds the master flashlight, and anything glowing is sacred.
The seven
- 01 · Ghost in the Graveyard — The ancestral classic: one ghost hides, everyone hunts, first spotter yells GHOST IN THE GRAVEYARD and the ghost chases them home. A hundred years old because it works.
- 02 · Flashlight Freeze — Tag with a beam instead of a hand. Caught in the light, you freeze; a teammate's tap thaws you. Cheap, endless, exhausting — in the good way.
- 03 · The Glow Hunt — A bag of glow sticks hidden across the yard, ten cracked and glowing, the rest dark and devious. Littles find the lit ones and feel like champions; big kids hunt the dark ones by touch.
- 04 · Monster, May I? — Red-light-green-light, but the caller is 'the monster' and stomps theatrically on red. The screaming is the point. Porch-light powered.
- 05 · Ghost Pong, After Dark — The minute-to-win-it staple, relocated to a card table under string lights. The setup guide
- 06 · The Eyeball Dig, Blindfolded-ish — The sensory-bin favorite gets meaner in the dark — the bin contents are a mystery until fingers commit. The setup guide
- 07 · One-Word Ghost Story — Around the firepit, the story grows one word per person. It will derail into nonsense within two laps. That's the win condition.
Darkness hides self-consciousness and doubles suspense. Use it.
