The scariest Halloween episodes of horror TV, ranked.
Ten Halloween episodes from American Horror Story, Supernatural, Stranger Things and Evil, ranked by IMDb rating, with the Edward Mordrake episode in first place. Real horror, for teens and up.
The scariest Halloween episodes tend to come from series that deal in fear all year, so this list sticks to horror shows. Ten episodes made the cut, six of them from American Horror Story across five of its seasons, with Supernatural, Stranger Things, The Vampire Diaries and Evil making up the rest.
The order is IMDb rating, best first, which tells you how much viewers love an episode rather than how hard it is to sit through. Everything here is for teens and up, and we say so plainly in each note when an entry is strictly for adults. American Horror Story is an anthology, so you can jump in at whichever season’s setting appeals.

01
Edward Mordrake: Part 2
The ghost of Edward Mordrake visits Freak Show’s carnival in a Halloween two-parter, and this second half takes the top spot on our list. Start with Part 1, and keep the kids out of the room.
-
02
It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester
Sam and Dean Winchester hunt monsters for a living, and this Halloween outing borrows its title from a Peanuts classic. The show runs on brotherly banter and real menace, and it’s one for grown-ups.

03
Tricks and Treats
A serial killer, aliens and demonic possession all share one church-run institution in the Asylum season, and this early episode’s title nods to trick-or-treating for good measure. Bleak and graphic, so not for kids.

04
Chapter Two: Trick or Treat, Freak
Will still can’t shake the Upside Down, but he and his friends trick-or-treat as Ghostbusters anyway. Far more viewers have rated this one than any other entry here, and it’s a friendlier way in for teens than the American Horror Story picks.

05
Burn, Witch. Burn!
Witches, a New Orleans academy and a title that points at the stake: Coven plays with as much style and wit as dread. Strictly for adults, and a good pick if you like your horror glamorous.
-
06
Haunted
Mystic Falls, two vampire brothers, the human caught between them, and a title that hints at a haunting. This is the romantic end of the list, with softer scares than the American Horror Story entries; teens and up.

07
Halloween: Part 1
American Horror Story began in the Murder House: a Los Angeles mansion, a family that has moved in, and a crowd of ghosts. Part 1 opens a two-part Halloween story, so queue Part 2 right behind it; adults only.
-
08
Halloween: Part 2
Best watched straight after Part 1, this finishes the Murder House Halloween story. The season is serialized, so earlier episodes help, and it is firmly adult viewing.
-
09
Devil's Night
On Devil’s Night, the eve of Halloween, the haunted Hotel Cortez hosts a dinner party for infamous killers. Macabre, theatrical and strictly for adults; a good fit if you like your horror stylized.

October 31
A skeptical psychologist and a priest in training investigate possession and the paranormal for the Catholic Church, and this episode is titled for the date itself. Adult horror built around a case to solve, and the most recent episode on this list.
The best Halloween episodes don’t pause a horror series for a party. They use the party as cover.
Stack a night in pairs: Halloween: Part 1 and Part 2 are one story, so watch them back to back. Edward Mordrake wants its Part 1 first, and if teens are watching, stick to the Stranger Things and Vampire Diaries entries and save the rest for later. The full watchlist has more Halloween episodes and movies, including gentler picks for younger viewers.
