Short Halloween movies for school nights, 90 minutes or less.
Short Halloween movies that fit a school night, from Zombieland and A Quiet Place to The Nightmare Before Christmas, with the runtime in every note and the scary ones flagged.
School nights have room for one good movie, not a marathon, so these short Halloween movies all wrap up in 90 minutes or less. The mix is deliberate: family favorites for the kids, horror comedies for grown-ups and some properly scary picks, with every scary one flagged.
We ordered them by popularity, so the most-rated movies come first, and each note gives the runtime. Eight of the twenty are mildly spooky, six are scary and six are terrifying; a couple of the mild ones are still comedies for older viewers, so read the notes. We last checked the data in September 2026.

01
Zombieland
A road trip through a zombie-filled America: a shy student, a gun-toting tough guy hunting the last Twinkie and two sisters bound for an amusement park team up. Funny first, scary second, over in 88 minutes, and for adults, not kids.
-
02
A Quiet Place
Blind alien creatures that hunt by sound have invaded the world, so one family has to survive in near silence. Tense, scary and exactly 90 minutes, the longest film on this list; best for teens and up, not small kids.
-
03
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town and tries to bring the holiday home, which causes plenty of confusion. The shortest film on this list at 76 minutes, and a mildly spooky animated musical for the whole family.
-
04
Corpse Bride
A shy groom practices his vows in the wrong place, and a dead young woman rises from her grave convinced he has just married her. A darkly funny 77-minute animated musical, with scares mild enough for most kids.
-
05
The Blair Witch Project
Three film students go into a Maryland forest to shoot a documentary about a local witch legend and vanish; the movie is the footage they left behind. Found-footage horror at the top of our scare scale: 81 minutes, strictly for adults.
-
06
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters
Brother and sister Hansel and Gretel are professional witch hunters who help innocent villagers, and one case might hold the key to their own past. An 88-minute action-fantasy with a horror streak; scary, and for adults rather than kids.
-
07
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre
On the way to a grandfather’s grave in rural Texas, five friends stumble onto a deserted-looking house, and something with a chainsaw is waiting inside. The oldest film here is a slasher through and through: adults only, and done in 83 minutes.
-
08
What We Do in the Shadows
Vampire roommates Viago, Deacon and Vladislav bicker over the chore wheel and the rent and try to get into nightclubs, all shot like a documentary. At 86 minutes it’s mild on scares, but this is an adult comedy and not for kids.
-
09
Hush
Living alone in the woods, a deaf writer has to fight for her life in silence when a masked killer appears at her window. A tense, terrifying 82-minute cat-and-mouse thriller, strictly for adults.
-
10
The Autopsy of Jane Doe
Sheriff Burke delivers an unidentified body, and as Tommy and Austin Tilden begin the autopsy, each impossible discovery makes things worse. Terrifying, not for kids, and one for a weekend rather than a school night, even at 86 minutes.
-
11
Hotel Transylvania 2
Pick this for younger kids: Dracula and his friends try to coax the monster out of his half-human, half-vampire grandson so that Mavis won’t leave the hotel. An animated comedy with very mild scares that wraps up in 89 minutes.
-
12
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
The village gardens are being sabotaged, and Wallace and his loyal dog Gromit set out to crack the mystery before the giant vegetable contest. A gentle 85-minute monster-movie comedy that works for the youngest viewers and the parents beside them.
-
13
Lights Out
Something supernatural comes back to terrorize a family whenever the lights go out, so every dark room becomes a problem. A simple premise played for real scares in 81 minutes; best for teens and up, with a lamp left on.
-
14
Scary Movie 4
Go in wanting silly, not scary: Cindy discovers that a little boy haunts her house and sets out to solve his murder, mostly as an excuse for jokes. An 83-minute comedy, not for little kids, and one of the lower-rated picks here.
-
15
Scooby-Doo
After a bitter split, the Mystery Inc. gang is brought separately to an island resort to look into strange goings-on. An 86-minute adventure comedy, light and easy on small kids; best for young Scooby fans and parents who grew up on the cartoon.
-
16
Frankenweenie
A boy’s beloved dog dies suddenly, and he sets out to bring the dog back to life with a science experiment. An 87-minute animated comedy-drama with a monster-movie streak; mildly spooky, but give sensitive kids a heads-up about the pet’s death.

17
The Babysitter
Cole stays up past his bedtime and learns that his babysitter belongs to a satanic cult willing to do anything to keep him quiet. An 85-minute horror comedy with a slasher streak: scary, and definitely not for kids despite the kid hero.
-
18
Trick 'r Treat
Five Halloween stories in 82 minutes: a principal with a secret life, kids pulling a prank, a woman who hates the holiday and breaks its rules, and a mean old man who meets a demonic trick-or-treater. Scary and funny, not for kids.
-
19
House of 1000 Corpses
Two young couples hunting murder legends in the backwoods of Texas end up prisoners of a bizarre, sadistic family of serial killers. A terrifying slasher that runs 89 minutes: for dedicated genre fans, with no kids in the room.

20
The best school-night Halloween movie is the one that ends before the bedtime argument starts.
Short runtimes make these easy to stack: any two fit inside three hours. Pair The Nightmare Before Christmas with Corpse Bride for an animated musical double bill, or Zombieland with What We Do in the Shadows for a grown-ups-only night of horror comedy. We’d never put two terrifying picks back to back on a school night; follow a scary one with something mild like Wallace & Gromit. The full Halloween watchlist has plenty more.
