Stop-motion Halloween movies have a texture computer animation rarely matches: small handmade sets, puppets and clay, and every frame posed by hand. We gathered the best known of them, plus the puppet specials and shows that share the same hands-on spirit. The first ten are films, specials and shorts, most popular first; the last eight are single Halloween episodes of puppet and clay shows.

Mostly it’s for families. Nearly all of the films carry our mildly spooky label and suit kids who like their monsters friendly, though a few are better from school age up, and the preschool shows at the back are the softest picks. Coraline is the scary one, so hold it for older kids and grown-ups; Wendell and Wild leans older too, and the Spitting Image episode is strictly for adults.

    Corpse Bride

    Rated PG · mildly spooky · 2005 · 7.4★ · 332,430 votes

A shy groom rehearsing his vows is claimed by a dead bride who climbs out of her grave, convinced they’re already married. It’s a musical that makes the afterlife livelier than the living world, and a better fit for school-age kids than toddlers.

  3. 03

    Coraline

    Rated PG · scary · 2009 · 7.8★ · 306,268 votes

The one film here we label scary, so hold it for older kids and grown-ups. A girl bored by her new town finds a hidden door to a version of home that seems too good to be true, which is exactly the problem.

  4. 04

Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit

    Rated G · mildly spooky · 2005 · 7.5★ · 158,749 votes

Someone, or something, is wrecking the village gardens before the giant-vegetable contest, and Wallace and his loyal dog Gromit are on the case. A cozy clay comedy that borrows werewolf-movie tricks for laughs: mildly spooky, and an easy pick for a mixed-age crowd.

  5. 05

    Frankenweenie

    Rated PG · mildly spooky · 2012 · 6.9★ · 127,711 votes

After his dog dies suddenly, a boy sets out to bring him back with a science experiment. Black-and-white and funny, with a nod to the old monster movies; mildly spooky, but the pet’s death comes early, so check your kid is ready.

    ParaNorman

    Rated PG · mildly spooky · 2012 · 7.0★ · 118,852 votes

To lift a centuries-old curse from his town, a misunderstood boy has to face down ghosts, zombies and the grown-ups too. A horror-comedy that’s mildly spooky by our scale, though the ghosts and zombies make it a better fit for school-age kids than preschoolers.

  7. 07

    The Dark Crystal

    Rated PG · mildly spooky · 1982 · 7.1★ · 78,007 votes

More dark fairy tale than Halloween party: the last of the Gelfling goes looking for a missing crystal shard to set his world right. The whole alien world is built from puppetry, which is the real draw, and it suits school-age kids and up.

  8. 08

    Wendell & Wild

    Rated PG-13 · mildly spooky · 2022 · 6.4★ · 15,182 votes

Two scheming demon brothers recruit 13-year-old Kat Elliot to summon them into the Land of the Living, in a stop-motion horror-comedy. Mildly spooky, but pitched at older kids and teens, so skip it for the little ones.

  9. 09

    Muppets Haunted Mansion

    mildly spooky · 2021 · 6.3★ · 9,388 votes

Gonzo has been challenged to spend Halloween night in the Haunted Mansion. Puppet comedy in a haunted house, mildly spooky and short enough to open a double bill for little kids.

  10. 10

    Claymation Comedy of Horrors

    mildly spooky · 1991 · 6.6★ · 262 votes

Clay monsters played for laughs, in a TV short with an anthology feel. Obscure and mildly spooky, so think of it as a bonus for clay fans rather than the main event of your night.

  11. 11

    Halloween

    Sesame Street · S46E35 · 2016 · 7.8★ · 10 votes

The puppet neighbors of Sesame Street do Halloween in an episode made for preschoolers. A safe first stop for the youngest trick-or-treaters, before you move on to anything spookier.

  12. 12

    Halloween Bear

    Bear in the Big Blue House · S03E05 · 1999 · 8.4★ · 16 votes

Bear in the Big Blue House is a warm, unhurried puppet show for toddlers and preschoolers, and this is its Halloween episode. Pick it for viewers too small for even the mildly spooky films.

  13. 13

    Halloween!

    Oobi · S03E09 · 2004 · 7.9★ · 15 votes

The cast of Oobi are hand puppets, which feels strange for a minute and then perfectly natural. It’s a preschool show, so this Halloween episode is a gentle pick for the smallest viewers.

  14. 14

    Eureeka's Castle Halloween Special

    Eureeka's Castle · 1991

A puppet series set in a castle gets a Halloween special, and it’s a nostalgia pick for parents who grew up on early-nineties kids’ TV. Made for small viewers, with no viewer ratings yet, so call it a curiosity rather than a guarantee.

  15. 15

    Halloween Special

    Spitting Image · S02E08 · 2021 · 4.4★ · 27 votes

Strictly for adults: a satirical show performed by rubber caricature puppets, here with a Halloween special. It has the lowest viewer rating on the list, so go for the novelty rather than a classic.

  16. 16

    Halloween

    Podge and Rodge. A Scare at Bedtime · S02E09 · 1998

Treat this one as a curiosity: a late-nineties comedy-horror puppet show that our listings tag as family viewing, with no viewer ratings yet and little else to go on. Preview it before the little kids do.

  17. 17

    Halloween

Kukla, Fran and Ollie · 1949

The oldest title on the list: an early-television show where Fran, the human host, chats with the puppets Kukla and Ollie. Think of this Halloween episode as a gentle history lesson for any age.

  18. 18

    Halloween

    Morph · S03E01 · 2019

Morph is a small clay shape-shifter, and this Halloween outing is a short one made for the whole family. Save it for the end of a night of scarier picks, when you want to land somewhere soft.

Stop-motion monsters feel lovingly made because somebody moved every one of them by hand.

For a mixed-age night, open with Muppets Haunted Mansion or the Were-Rabbit while the youngest are still awake, then work up to The Nightmare Before Christmas. For older kids and grown-ups, Coraline or Wendell and Wild makes the late show, and Frankenweenie works any time. Our full watchlist covers every Halloween title we track, plenty of them live-action, for when you’ve run out of puppets.
