10 costumes from one black hoodie.
No sewing, no money, one evening. Everything below starts with the hoodie you already own and things from around the house.
The black hoodie is the little black dress of Halloween: it disappears into darkness, it layers over anything, and with one prop it becomes a character. Every idea below is a one-evening build — most are one-hour — and none of them involve a needle.
The universal trick: whatever you attach, attach it with safety pins from the inside or double-sided tape, so the hoodie survives to trick-or-treat another year.
The ten
- 01 · The Storm Cloud — Hot-glue or pin polyester pillow stuffing over the hood and shoulders, hang strips of silver tinsel as rain. Carry a squirt bottle for weather effects (ask first).
- 02 · The Ninja — Hood up, black pants, a strip of black cloth across the nose bridge. A wrapping-paper tube wrapped in foil is your katana. The classic for a reason.
- 03 · The Grim Reaper (Casual) — Hood up and low. Cut a scythe blade from cardboard, foil it, tape to a broom handle. Bonus: a name tag that reads DEATH — CUSTOMER SERVICE.
- 04 · The Headless Hoodie — Zip the hoodie over your head entirely and look through the fabric; stuff the hood so it stands. Carry a 'head' — a pumpkin bucket wearing sunglasses works.
- 05 · The Static Screen — Pin a rectangle of white paper printed with TV static to your chest, draw a channel number in the corner. Groups: each person is a different channel.
- 06 · The Cat Burglar — Hood up, paper cat ears taped inside the hood's edge, eyeliner whiskers, a pillowcase marked LOOT. Two costumes in one pun.
- 07 · The Eclipse — Cut a large cardboard sun, foil-ray it, pin it to your back so it peeks around your silhouette. You are the moon, obviously. Walk slowly across rooms.
- 08 · The Wednesday Addams Bouncer — Hood down, hair in braids (real or yarn, pinned to the hood), deadpan expression mandatory. The hoodie reads as goth formalwear if you add a white collar cut from paper.
- 09 · The Video Game Loading Screen — Pin a paper progress bar across the chest — filled to 87% — with LOADING… above it. Stand very still near doorways. Move only when someone stares.
- 10 · The Shadow — All black, hood up, and you follow one friend closely all night doing everything they do a half-second later. Costs nothing. Commits to the bit or fails entirely.
