PHOTO · MAKEIT-LOVEIT.COM

This adorable jellyfish costume uses a bubble umbrella as the base, covered with sheer fabric and LED lights for a magical glow. The dress is made from knit velour with ruffled sleeves and diagonal sheer panels, while ribbons and boas create flowing tentacles. Perfect for Halloween or costume parties, it's a whimsical and eye-catching outfit.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Make a pattern by tracing a simple knit dress, add seam allowance, and angle the bottom to one side. Ensure the fabric's stretch goes side to side.
  2. Cut two rectangles measuring 3 by 28 inches for the ruffled sleeves.
  3. For the diagonal sheer piece on the front, lay a yard of sheer fabric over the dress edge at an angle and cut to fit.
  4. Cut 1.5 yards of coordinating sheer into strips about 11 inches wide to create 5 ruffles—three for the front and two for the back.
  5. Fold the raw edges of the neckline under and sew using a stretch stitch on both the front and back pieces.
  6. Sew the shoulder seams together with the right sides of the dress facing each other.
  7. Gather each sleeve piece and adjust the gathers to fit the armhole openings.
  8. Pin and sew the sleeves to the armholes, then repeat for the other side.
  9. Attach the large sheer piece to the front and back of the dress at an angle using a stretch stitch.
  10. Gather the ruffle pieces by folding them in half and sewing a gathering stitch along the top edge.
  11. Adjust the gathers to match the top of the dress where the sheer piece is attached, then pin and sew to attach.
  12. Sew the top ruffle through both the sheer and bottom dress layer; attach the remaining ruffles only to the top sheer fabric.
  13. Sew the side seams, including through the sleeves, with the right sides of the dress together.
  14. Drape 1.5 yards of sheer fabric over the top of the bubble umbrella and tie it to the top with ribbon.
  15. Trim the sheer fabric around the edges of the umbrella with scissors.
  16. Tie boas to each end tip of the umbrella using small ribbon or yarn.
  17. Tie pieces of ribbon about a yard long to each tip of the umbrella to act as tentacles.
  18. Wind LED lights inside the umbrella for a glowing effect.
