Chocolate Skeleton Cookies Recipe

These chocolate skeleton cookies start with a rich cocoa dough rolled and cut into gingerbread men shapes. After baking, they're decorated with a simple powdered sugar icing piped into skeleton details. Let the icing set for an hour for a crisp finish that's both tasty and eerie.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Heat your oven to 350°F.
  2. Prepare baking sheets by lining them with parchment paper.
  3. Beat the butter and sugar together until creamy.
  4. Mix in the egg and vanilla extract until thoroughly incorporated.
  5. In another bowl, combine the flour and cocoa powder with a whisk.
  6. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture a spoonful at a time on low speed, scraping down the sides of the bowl often.
  7. Lightly dust your work surface with cocoa powder or flour.
  8. Roll out the dough to a thickness of 1/4 inch.
  9. Use a gingerbread man cookie cutter to cut out shapes, then place them on the prepared baking sheets.
  10. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the cookies are set.
  11. Let the cookies sit in the pan for 3 minutes, then move them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  12. In a small bowl, stir together powdered sugar, milk, and corn syrup until the mixture is smooth.
  13. Transfer the icing to a piping bag or a zip-top bag with a tiny corner snipped off to pipe skeleton designs onto the cookies.
  14. Keep piped lines spaced apart to prevent them from bleeding into each other.
  15. Allow the cookies to rest for at least one hour so the icing hardens.
