Build a spooky gingerbread house from graham crackers and royal icing, then decorate with your favorite Halloween candies.
Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at iheartnaptime.net.
This Halloween gingerbread house uses graham crackers cut into house shapes and held together with a simple powdered sugar icing. After assembling and letting it dry, you can decorate with candies, sprinkles, and other treats for a festive centerpiece.
Ingredients
Directions
- Set graham crackers on a cutting board and use a serrated knife to cut pieces. Optionally, use cake boards as a base or glue two full crackers together for a base. For each house, you need 5 crackers. To make the front, cut from the right middle edge diagonally to the top left of a whole cracker, using a sawing motion, then break off. Repeat for the back.
- Cut a triangle from the left middle side of the same cracker to form the house shape for the front. Repeat with another whole cracker for the back.
- For the sides, break one cracker in half. For the roof, cut off 1/4 of a cracker. Repeat to make 4 sets of front, back, sides, roof, and base.
- In a medium bowl, mix powdered sugar with 1 tablespoon water. Add another tablespoon water and stir until combined; it will be clumpy.
- If needed, add water 1 teaspoon at a time until smooth but thicker than typical icing so it doesn't run. Test by lifting the spoon and turning it over; icing should stay put. If it drizzles, add 1–2 tablespoons powdered sugar.
- Spoon the icing into a zip-top bag and snip a corner for piping.
- Pipe icing onto edges of the front and one side piece (work two pieces at a time). Hold together for about 15 seconds until they stick. Pipe icing around bottom edges and press onto base. Add remaining sides and roof. Pipe a line of icing around the base for extra sturdiness.
- Let the house dry for about 30 minutes before decorating. Place candies in bowls and decorate as desired.
