Halloween Royal Icing Cookies
Create spooky shiny royal icing cookies in orange, black, and white for Halloween.
Our own summary of the original by Camille — the full post and photos live at bakerstreetsociety.com.
These Halloween royal icing cookies start with a buttery sugar cookie base. The icing is colored orange, black, and white, then applied by outlining and flooding. Using a lazy Susan and a fan heater ensures a glossy finish.
Ingredients
Directions
- Prepare the cookie dough using the unsalted butter, granulated sugar, whole egg, yolk, vanilla extract, salt, and all-purpose flour. Roll, cut into shapes, and bake. Let the cookies cool completely before decorating.
- Make the royal icing by combining egg whites, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, butter emulsion, and almond emulsion. Gradually add water until the icing reaches a thick but flowable consistency. Beat until stiff peaks form.
- Divide the icing into three bowls. Tint one bowl orange and another black, leaving the third white. Place each cooled cookie on a rotating lazy Susan. Outline each cookie with a thin line of icing, then flood the inside with more icing. Set the cookies in front of a small fan heater to dry quickly, which helps the icing stay glossy.
- Store the finished cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
