About this

From costume checks to trick-or-treating precautions, learn how to ensure a safe and spooky Halloween for everyone.

Tips

  • Stash the Treats: Keep chocolate and sugar-free candies containing xylitol away from pets, as they are toxic.
  • Party Time: Keep pets in a separate, comfortable room away from the front door during peak trick-or-treating hours to reduce stress from visitors and costumes.
  • Party Time: Distract pets with favorite toys, such as chew toys or food puzzles for dogs and interactive toys for cats.
  • Party Time: Keep carved jack-o-lanterns and candles away from pets to prevent fires and burns, and keep wires out of paw's reach.
  • Be Careful with Costumes: Do not put pets in costumes unless they are comfortable with them. Ensure costumes do not limit movement, sight, or breathing, and check for choking hazards.
  • Be Careful with Costumes: Keep human costume accessories away from pets to prevent choking or toxicity.
  • Keep Pets Easily Identifiable: Ensure pets wear reflective collars, are securely leashed, and have proper identification tags, especially when out after dark.
  • If you suspect your pet may have ingested a toxic substance, contact your veterinarian or call ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 immediately.
