This Halloween dessert combines a rich brownie bottom with homemade tombstone-shaped cookies filled with chocolate cream. Decorate the graveyard scene with mini pumpkins, candy, and gummy worms for a spooky effect. The cookies are baked at 400°F for just 5-8 minutes and the brownies at 325°F for 35-40 minutes.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Place 1/4 cup of butter in a microwave-safe bowl and heat until melted. Add 6 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder and stir to combine.
  2. Incorporate 1 cup of sugar, 2 eggs, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/3 cup flour, and 1/4 teaspoon salt into the cocoa mixture.
  3. Preheat your oven to 325°F. Meanwhile, grease and flour an 8x8-inch baking pan.
  4. Transfer the brownie batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center emerges clean.
  5. For the cookie dough, sift 3 cups of flour, 1 cup of granulated sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt into a mixing bowl. Add 1 cup of soft butter, 1 slightly beaten egg, 3 tablespoons of cream, and 1 teaspoon of almond extract. Mix until well combined, then refrigerate for several hours.
  6. After chilling, take a piece of dough about the size of an apple. Flatten it in your hand, then roll it out on a floured surface to roughly 1/4 inch thickness.
  7. Use a tombstone-shaped cookie cutter to cut shapes from the rolled dough. Place them on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 400°F for 5 to 8 minutes. Remove from the oven the moment they start to brown, and transfer to a wire rack to cool.
  8. Spread chocolate frosting on the flat side of one cookie, then press another cookie on top to make a sandwich. On the upper portion of the cookie, pipe the letters 'RIP' using icing.
  9. Carefully insert the cookie tombstones into the cooled brownie base, using a bit of frosting as 'glue' so they stand upright like graveyard markers.
  10. Adorn the graveyard scene with mini pumpkins, candy, and other decorations. For a realistic effect, use green-tinted coconut as grass or crushed cookie crumbs as dirt. Add gummy worms for an extra creepy touch.
