This tutorial shows you how to make a paper mache candy bowl using a glass bowl as a mold. You'll paint it black and red, then decorate with foam tombstones and a tree, plus a homemade spider and a black bird. It takes a couple of days due to drying time but is a fun Halloween craft.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Turn the bowl that will serve as the mold upside down and wrap its outside with aluminum foil, folding any extra foil into the interior of the bowl.
  2. Tear the grocery bags or kraft paper into pieces about 2 to 3 inches in size.
  3. In a small mixing bowl, combine four parts Mod Podge with one part water and stir with a stir stick. Dip each paper piece into the mixture and place it on the foil-covered bowl's exterior, overlapping pieces to fully cover the surface. Keep the bowl inverted over a can so you can spin it easily. Continue adding paper until you have 3 to 4 layers covering the bowl.
  4. Allow the paper bowl to dry for 24 hours.
  5. Once dry, gently peel the foil off the inside of the glass bowl to release the paper shell, then carefully remove the foil from the paper shell.
  6. Paint the paper bowl using black on the outside and red on the inside. Let the paint dry completely.
  7. Use a craft knife to cut a spooky tree shape and three tombstone shapes from black craft foam. If using templates, transfer the designs onto the foam with light transfer paper held in place by blue painter's tape. Glue these foam shapes to the bowl's exterior with foam glue, using clothespins to hold them while the glue dries for 24 hours.
  8. Thread black embroidery floss through a small black pompom to create a spider. Coat the floss 'legs' with glue to stiffen them. String the spider onto a piece of white thread and attach it to the tree.
  9. Paint a small bird figurine black with craft paint and glue it to the tree. If the tree begins to droop, brace it by gluing a black-painted bamboo skewer to both the back of the tree and the top of the bowl.
