This guide walks you through creating a Frankenstein costume using a plastic milk jug, burlap, and basic craft supplies. You will modify the jug for a headpiece, distress clothing for a worn look, and assemble a tunic with twine lacing to bring the iconic character to life.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Trim the upper portion of the milk container, slicing just beneath the handle. Then, snip the lower corners to ensure a comfortable fit over the head.
  2. Secure the two bottle caps onto the lateral sides of the modified container using the adhesive gun.
  3. Apply a coat of green spray paint to both the container and the gardening gloves, then allow them to air dry completely.
  4. Remove approximately three inches of fabric from the hem of each pant leg. Create a fringe along one cut edge of this removed material to simulate hair, then attach it to the crown of the headpiece.
  5. Use the red acrylic paint to draw a scar across the container, allowing the design to dry.
  6. Distress the cuffs of the sweatpants and the sleeves of the black T-shirt by pulling out threads to create a frayed effect.
  7. Fold the burlap fabric in half and cut a circular opening in the middle of the folded edge for the neck. Pull threads from all four edges to create a frayed border.
  8. Measure down roughly 15 inches from the folded edge and cut small openings on both the front and back panels on each side.
  9. Have the child wear the sweatpants, green long-sleeve shirt, black T-shirt, socks, and shoes. Drape the burlap tunic over them, weave the heavy jute twine through the side openings, and knot it securely at the front or back.
  10. Apply green face paint to the child's skin, then position the crafted headpiece on their head to complete the look.
