Making your own pumpkin purée is simple with two convenient techniques. You can steam peeled, cubed pumpkin on the stovetop or microwave halved pumpkin without any prep. Both methods yield a smooth purée perfect for pies, soups, and more.

Directions
- For steaming, first remove the peel and seeds from the pumpkin, then cut it into uniform cubes. Place these cubes in a steamer or a colander that sits above a pot of boiling water. Let them steam for about 10 minutes. Check doneness by piercing with a knife; if not fully tender, steam another 5 minutes. Once cooked, mash the pumpkin and allow it to cool.
- Alternatively, use the microwave. Slice the pumpkin in half without peeling or removing seeds. Set the halves cut-side up in the microwave and cook for 20 minutes. Test with a fork to see if the flesh is soft; continue cooking if needed. When done, scoop out the soft flesh into a bowl, mash it, and let it cool.
