These adorable meringue ghosts and pumpkins are a fun Halloween baking project. You'll whip up a glossy meringue, then pipe and bake half as white ghosts and half as orange pumpkins. Decorate them with googly eyes and drawn faces for a cute, festive dessert.
Ingredients
Directions
- Set your oven to 200°F and cover two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Place the egg whites, cream of tartar, and salt in the bowl of a stand mixer with the whisk attachment. Start mixing at low speed and slowly ramp up to high. Once the egg whites start to foam, add the sugar one spoonful at a time. Mix in the vanilla. Continue beating on high until the mixture is glossy and forms stiff peaks.
- Move half the meringue into a piping bag fitted with a round tip. On one baking sheet, pipe three rows of four meringue ghosts, spacing them 1 to 2 inches apart.
- Stir orange food coloring gel into the remaining meringue. Pipe three rows of four pumpkin-shaped meringues on the second baking sheet, also spaced 1 to 2 inches apart.
- Bake the meringues for 1 hour. Then turn off the oven and let the baking sheets sit inside the closed oven for another hour. Take them out and let them cool completely.
- For the ghost meringues, use a small dab of melted white chocolate to attach googly eyes. For the pumpkin meringues, draw eyes and a mouth with a black food-safe marker.
