These Oogie Boogie Dark Chocolate Brownies are a fun Halloween treat. The recipe yields 15–18 brownies that are topped with a green swirled frosting and a character face drawn in black decorating gel. Optional gummy worms add an extra creepy touch.
Ingredients
Directions
- In a large saucepan over medium-low heat, melt the two sticks of unsalted butter. Remove from heat and let it cool a bit.
- Prepare a 9x13-inch baking pan by lining it with parchment paper, making sure the paper hangs over two opposite sides. Grease the parchment and any visible pan areas with butter. Heat your oven to 350°F.
- To the saucepan with the melted butter, add the sugar, four eggs, and vanilla extract. Use a wooden spoon to mix everything together.
- Next, add the dark chocolate cocoa powder, all-purpose flour, salt, and baking powder. Stir with a wooden spoon until the batter is smooth. Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan and spread it into an even layer.
- Bake the brownies for roughly 35 minutes. They are done when the edges start pulling away from the pan and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the brownies to cool fully. Once cool, cut them into squares—you should get 15 to 18 pieces. Cutting 15 gives you more room for decorating, while 18 makes smaller brownies. Arrange the squares on a counter or large cutting board.
- Scoop one container of vanilla frosting into a small bowl. Add a few drops of green gel food coloring and stir with a metal spoon. Continue adding color a few drops at a time until you get the green shade you want. Place the bowl in the fridge for a few minutes to firm up.
- Transfer the green frosting into an 8-inch piping bag up to the fill line. Pipe a swirl on each brownie, going around about three times, making each circle slightly smaller to form a point at the top. Repeat for all brownies you wish to frost.
- Chill the frosted brownies in the refrigerator for a few minutes. Then, using the black decorating gel, draw Oogie Boogie faces on each brownie. To store, arrange the brownies in a deep pan (so the frosting stays intact) and cover with plastic wrap. If needed, insert toothpicks to prop the wrap away from the frosting. Keep refrigerated until you're ready to serve.
- Just before serving, you can top each brownie with a gummy worm or two, if you like.
