These dark chocolate brownies are topped with green frosting and decorated to look like Oogie Boogie. With a swirl of piped frosting and a black gel face, they're a fun Halloween treat. Optional gummy worms add extra creepy flair.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a large saucepan over medium-low heat, melt 2 sticks of unsalted butter. Once melted, take it off the heat and let it cool a bit.
  2. Prep a 9x13-inch baking pan by lining it with parchment paper, letting the paper hang over two sides. Butter the parchment and any exposed pan areas. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  3. Into the saucepan with the melted butter, stir in 3/4 cups sugar, 4 large eggs, and 2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract. Mix with a wooden spoon until well combined.
  4. Add 2/3 cup dark chocolate cocoa powder, 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon baking powder. Stir with a wooden spoon until the batter is smooth. Pour it into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  5. Bake for about 35 minutes, or until the edges pull away from the pan and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Let the brownies cool completely, then cut them into squares (you'll get 15 to 18 pieces). If you cut 15, you'll have more room to decorate; 18 gives smaller brownies. Place the squares on a counter or large cutting board.
  7. Take one container of store-bought vanilla frosting and transfer it to a small bowl. Add a few drops of green gel food coloring (like Wilton's "leaf" shade) and stir with a metal spoon. Keep adding drops until you reach your desired green color. Pop the bowl in the fridge for a few minutes.
  8. Fill an 8-inch piping bag with the green frosting to the fill line. On each brownie, pipe the frosting in a swirling motion, making about three turns, each smaller than the last, and try to create a point at the top. Repeat for all brownies you want to frost.
  9. Place the frosted brownies in the refrigerator for a few minutes. Then, use black decorating gel (like Wilton's tube) to draw the Oogie Boogie face on each. Arrange the brownies in a deep pan so the frosting tops aren't disturbed. Cover with plastic wrap—you can use toothpicks to keep the wrap from touching the frosting. Refrigerate until serving.
  10. Right before serving, you can add gummy worms on top if you like.
