This playful Halloween craft transforms a paper plate into a puppet stage. Kids can paint a moon and sky, assemble a yarn-haired witch, and build a miniature broom. An adult cuts a slit so the witch can slide in and race around the plate from behind.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Position your cup on the paper plate to mark where the full moon will go, then trace around it with a pencil. Paint the traced circle yellow and the rest of the plate gray. Also paint the jumbo craft stick gray. Let everything dry completely.
  2. Create the witch by cutting a 1.5-inch circle and a small triangle nose from green cardstock. From black cardstock, cut a witch hat and a triangular dress. Glue orange yarn strands to the back of the green circle for hair. Attach the hat above the head and the dress below. Then glue on one small googly eye and the nose, and draw a smile using a black marker.
  3. Build the witch's broom: cut three short pieces of tan yarn and one longer piece. Glue the three short pieces to the end of a regular craft stick. Wrap the long yarn piece around the stick and the glued yarn, then tie it in a knot. Trim the yarn ends with scissors to shape them like broom bristles.
  4. Attach the witch figure to the broomstick, then glue the broom handle to the end of the gray jumbo craft stick.
  5. Have an adult use a craft knife to cut a horizontal slit across the bottom third of the paper plate, wide enough for the puppet to slide through.
  6. Insert the witch puppet into the slit from the back of the plate. Hold the plate steady with one hand while using the other to move the jumbo craft stick behind the plate, making the witch fly around on her broomstick.
