Directions

  1. Heat your oven to 325°F.
  2. In a mixing bowl, melt the butter, then let it cool a bit.
  3. Add both sugars (brown and granulated) and beat on medium speed for about 1 minute until combined.
  4. Beat in the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla extract until fully mixed.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and baking soda, then add to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
  6. Fold in about 9 ounces (1 1/2 cups) of chocolate chips into the dough.
  7. Scoop the dough into 18 portions, each about 1/4 cup. Use a #16 ice cream scoop if desired.
  8. Press a few reserved chips onto the tops of each cookie dough ball.
  9. Set aside the remaining 2 ounces (1/3 cup) of chips for decorating spiders.
  10. Bake one sheet at a time for 14 to 18 minutes.
  11. Let cookies cool completely on the baking sheets.
  12. Place the reserved 2 ounces of chips in a small microwave-safe bowl.
  13. Microwave for 20 seconds, stir, then another 15 seconds, stir.
  14. Let the chocolate sit for 1 minute, then stir again.
  15. If not fully melted, heat in 10-second bursts, stirring between each, until smooth.
  16. Transfer the melted chocolate to a squeeze bottle with a #2 round tip, or a pastry bag or zip-top bag with a tiny corner snipped off.
  17. Pipe small spider bodies and legs onto the cookies, using the larger chips as the body.
  18. Let the chocolate dry completely, then serve and enjoy the surprised looks!
