These spooky spider treats are made from a simple crispy rice cereal mixture tinted black, formed into flattened balls, and decorated with licorice legs and candy eyes. The recipe yields about 18 spiders, ideal for Halloween parties or trick-or-treat bags.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine the butter and marshmallows. Heat in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes until melted. (Alternatively, melt butter in a pot on the stove, then add marshmallows and stir until melted.)
  2. Stir the mixture well until the butter and marshmallows are fully combined and smooth.
  3. Add several drops of black food coloring to the mixture and stir until the color is evenly distributed.
  4. Pour in the crispy rice cereal and mix with a long metal spoon until all the cereal is coated with the marshmallow mixture.
  5. Lay a sheet of parchment paper on a flat surface. Lightly grease the outside of two sandwich bags with butter.
  6. Place your hands into the greased sandwich bags. Use them to scoop up the sticky cereal mixture and form it into balls that are slightly larger than golf balls.
  7. Set the balls on the parchment paper and gently flatten them with the bottom of a bowl to create spider bodies.
  8. Using clean kitchen scissors, cut each black licorice twist into three equal pieces. For each spider, press 3 pieces into the left side and 3 pieces into the right side to form legs.
  9. While the marshmallow mixture is still sticky, place two candy eyes on the top of each spider.
  10. Allow the spiders to dry and set completely before serving.
