Family Halloween costumes with a baby or toddler, theme by theme.
Sixteen family themes with a part for the baby or toddler, from the Addams Family, Bluey and Toy Story to a rainbow wagon and a baby bee in a carrier, plus one more guide and a short safety note.
Family Halloween costumes get tricky once a baby or toddler joins the group, so these sixteen themes each give the youngest a real part, and one more guide from the site closes the list. Several build the baby's part from a onesie, a carrier or a wagon, and each theme links to its creator's own tutorial. The order runs from TV and movie families through storybook casts, snacks, school supplies, space, weather and an arcade classic, to a bee in a carrier.
A baby changes the rules, so where a tutorial puts a mask, face paint or small glued pieces on the baby, the blurb says what to swap. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says a costume should fit well and not be too long or bulky, and that a mask, hat or cape must never block the face or become a choking risk. It also says to look for flame-resistant labels and add reflective trim. The FDA says face paint lets a child see better than a mask does, but should be tested on an arm for a couple of days first. We'd apply the AAP's small-parts rule for toys to glued or clipped pieces, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission's drawstring rule for kids' outerwear to neck ties. In any carrier, the AAP says to keep fabric and your own body off the baby's nose and mouth.
Seventeen ways to give the baby a part
Sixteen family themes, TV and movie casts first
- The Addams Family with a baby Pubert — Closet-and-thrift Morticia and Gomez, plus a baby Pubert in a gray outfit with a felt bow tie and spider, about half an hour of fabric glue and Velcro. Skip the eyeliner mustache, and leave off any felt a baby could pull loose. The tutorial
- The Simpsons, family of six — Spray-painted foam mattress-topper hair and foam-ball eyes do most of the work, with bought basics for the rest and no sewing. The youngest two are Maggie, in a nightgown and pacifier, and the family dog, in a toddler-size beanie, lounge set and tutu. The tutorial
- Monsters, Inc. with a toddler Boo — Boo goes to the toddler, in everyday pink and purple with pigtail bows, carrying a pumpkin pail turned into Little Mikey. The rest of the set: a no-sew thrifted Sulley hoodie, a Mike tee, a Celia headpiece and a paper-mache Roz pail. The tutorial
- Toy Story across three generations — The page totals $44: the toddler is Jessie in the one bought costume, the grandparents are Woody and Bo Peep, and the parents are Potato Heads cut from trifold boards. Try the toddler's costume on early; it ran baggy, and the hat got refused. The tutorial
- The Flintstones with baby Pebbles — Some sewing, but no hemming, in this fleece Bedrock: Fred in a spotted orange tunic, Wilma in a one-shoulder white dress with a clay-bead necklace, and baby Pebbles in a painted-spot top and diaper cover. Leave the clay bone off the baby's ponytail. The tutorial
- The Incredibles with a newborn Jack-Jack — Red tees with a taped-on logo, black layers and felt masks make a no-sew, last-minute set for under $15. The newborn is Jack-Jack in the same colors; skip the mask on a baby, since the AAP says one must never block the face. The tutorial
- Bluey and the Heeler family — Felt chest and spot patches plus ear headbands turn blue and tan hoodies or tees into the Heelers, using fabric glue or hot glue and no sewing machine. Ages aren't given, but Bingo's tan onesie-or-tee base is the one for your smallest. The tutorial
- Where the Wild Things Are — Start early: the parents' paper-mache masks need a day or two to dry. Max wears white and the baby is a furry hooded wild thing with cardboard horns and a face-painted nose; skip the paint, or patch-test it on an arm first, per the FDA. The tutorial
- Peter Pan with a babywearing Peter — The infant is Peter Pan, and the idea worth stealing is a felt panel that Velcros onto a mei tai carrier, so he's worn, not pushed; keep the panel clear of the baby's nose and mouth. The toddler is Tinker Bell, the dog the crocodile. The tutorial
- Goldilocks and the Three Bears — Fur vests over closet basics make the bears, with the youngest as Baby Bear in a black onesie and leg warmers and the family pet as Goldilocks in a doll-hair wig. Check that the youngest's clip-on ears and tiny tail can't come loose. The tutorial
- Fruit snacks trio — Matching blue-and-white outfits dotted with hot-glued felt fruit and an iron-on logo take about half an hour and roughly $30. On the toddler, tug-test every glued fruit and leave the felt-fruit hair clips off, since small pieces are a choking risk. The tutorial
- School supplies: pencil, eraser, notebook — Marker does the heavy lifting: a pink onesie lettered in fabric marker makes the baby the eraser, a yellow dress and a party-hat point make the pencil, and a ruled T-shirt is the notebook. Nothing bulky or detachable on the baby, and it's last-minute friendly. The tutorial
- Space family: astronaut, rocket ship, solar system — Space gets a baby astronaut here: a patched sweatsuit and a jetpack of two painted soda bottles, with the parents in a craft-foam rocket-ship dress and a solar-system tee of foam spheres. Add a sun, stars or a moon for more family. The tutorial
- Weather family with a rainbow wagon — Sun, rain and a toddler cloud: the cloud rides in a wagon dressed as a rainbow, with a foam-core arch zip-tied on, beside a sun headband and a raindrop umbrella. About four hours of work, and wagons suit kids who aren't walking yet. The tutorial
- Pac-Man and the ghosts — Yellow poster board worn like necklaces makes Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man; the little ones are felt-eyed ghosts in zigzag-hem T-shirts. No sewing, about $12 in supplies, one nap's work, but the shirts are sized big, so cut hems short enough to clear small feet. The tutorial
- Beekeeper and baby bee in a carrier — A black outfit with yellow duct-tape stripes makes the baby bee, and a stocking-and-stuffing beehive attaches to the front of the carrier. Leave off the glued pom-pom antennae, keep the hive off the baby's nose and mouth, and pass on the toddler version's neck strap. The tutorial
One more guide, for mom and baby
- DIY Milk and Cookies Halloween Costume for Mom and Baby — Mom wears a milk carton built from a cardboard box, its peaked top glued from the flaps, spray-painted white and hand-lettered. The child is the cookie, sandwiched between two painted chair cushions tied at the shoulders, which is soft and easy to take off. The guide
Start with the baby's part, keep it simple, and let the grown-ups carry the props.
Short on time? The Incredibles and the pencil, eraser and notebook trio are both pitched as last-minute builds, and for a baby who isn't walking yet the carrier and wagon themes keep the walking to the grown-ups. Whatever you pick, the AAP also suggests a trial wearing before the night, a backup costume for leaks and spit-up, and a look at the forecast so you can add layers. The full family and group costume shelf has more, each linked to its creator's guide.
