Ingredients
Directions
- Set your oven to the temperature specified on the cake mix box and grease two 8-inch round cake pans.
- In a bowl, combine the cake mix, eggs, oil, and water, stirring until the batter is smooth. Split the batter evenly between the two prepared pans.
- Bake the cakes according to the package directions, then let them cool completely. If the tops are domed, use a serrated knife to level them.
- To make the frosting, beat the softened butter until it's light and fluffy. Slowly add the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and a splash of heavy cream, beating until smooth.
- Add black gel food coloring a little at a time, mixing well after each addition, until the frosting reaches a deep black shade.
- Place one cake layer on a turntable, spread a layer of frosting on top, then add the second layer. Frost the entire cake with the black frosting, smoothing it with an offset spatula. Refrigerate for 20 minutes to set.
- For the chocolate drip, heat the remaining heavy cream until it just begins to steam, then pour it over the chocolate chips. Let it sit for a minute, then stir until smooth and glossy. Mix in the corn syrup for extra shine.
- Allow the ganache to cool slightly, then spoon it around the top edge of the cake, letting it drip down the sides naturally for a spooky effect.
- While the drip is still tacky, press candy eyeballs onto the cake in desired spots. Chill the cake until you're ready to serve.
