These step-by-step guides cover a range of styles, from graphic comic-inspired looks with bold lines and rhinestones to edible ice cream creations and whimsical spirit gum embellishments. Each idea uses common makeup products and craft supplies, making them achievable for costume enthusiasts. Whether you want to be a walking comic strip or a sweet-and-spooky doll, these tutorials have you covered.

Directions

  1. To achieve a comic-inspired Roy Lichtenstein effect, emphasize features using bold black lines (a liquid eyeliner is ideal) and replicate Ben Day dots. This printing technique, named after illustrator Benjamin Henry Day, Jr., uses mechanical dots to create shading and variation with a limited primary palette—rendered here in white by Nicole.
  2. For extra dimension, add rhinestones one by one. Use Duo eyelash glue as adhesive and a dual-end rhinestone pickup tool for easy handling. Any flat-back rhinestones work, and you can choose any color gems you prefer.
  3. For an ice cream–inspired look, keep the "melt" and lips cohesive by using the same product. Attach real sprinkles with clear or white lash glue to avoid visible black glue. (As a bonus, you can craft a headband: spray-paint cotton mounds to resemble ice cream and glue a sugar cone on top—though this one was eaten by a dog before being photographed.)
  4. Purchase a zipper from a craft store (or reuse one from old clothing) and trim away the fabric beyond the teeth. Try positioning the zipper at various angles on your face, cut it to size, and dust with loose powder to mark placement. Apply spirit gum along the outline, press the zipper onto your face, and use sponges, brushes, and stippling with water-based makeup to create any unzipped effect you desire.
  5. For a sweet but spooky look, affix twine and stuffing with spirit gum, then add makeup to blend, creating a style that mixes Raggedy Ann with The Nightmare Before Christmas.
