Start with a white cake mix tinted orange or yellow, then layer three frostings—orange, yellow, and white—using piping bags with closed star tips. Stack the swirls from largest to smallest for a festive fall dessert that’s easy to make and sure to impress.

Directions

  1. Mix up a box of white cake mix according to package directions, but add a few drops of orange or yellow food coloring to tint the batter before baking.
  2. Divide three cans of white vanilla frosting into three bowls. Tint one bowl orange, another yellow, and leave the third plain white.
  3. Spoon each frosting into its own piping bag fitted with a large closed star tip, which will give the frosting a lovely ruffled look when piped.
  4. Pipe a big swirl of orange buttercream on top of the cake, then a smaller swirl of yellow buttercream on top of that, and finish with a tiny white star right at the peak.
