Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at bargainbabe.com.
Transform into a zipper face, clown, stitched mime, zombie bride, spider, old person, cat, or doll using just makeup and a few accessories. Each costume focuses on face paint techniques, with tips on hair and clothing to complete the look. No expensive costumes required—just your imagination and some basic supplies.
Directions
- Paint a raindrop shape on your face starting from mid-nose and splashing down to cover your entire chin.
- Carefully glue the zipper onto your face using the step-by-step instructions from Instructables.
- Wear black clothing to complete the look.
- Before starting, decide on a specific clown look you want to create.
- Apply white and black makeup as a base, then use red for scary accents or primary colors for a happy clown.
- Borrow a jester hat, top hat, cowboy hat, or any outrageous hat—even a plastic one from the dollar store works.
- If you don't have a hat, go for huge hair: make it stick out with egg whites, frizz it and spray heavily, or create a sea of two dozen ponytails. Add feathers, a boa, or flowers for extra impact.
- Cover your entire face with white makeup, leaving large circles for your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Fill those circles with black makeup, and add a few vertical 'stitches' across your lips.
- Add red accents—my friend Meg placed a red flower in her hair, which looked great.
- Choose black, white, red, and green as the main colors for a zombie bride, dead bride, or monster bride costume.
- If you don't have a veil, a big white dress makes your costume unmistakable.
- Focus the makeup on your eyes and mouth—there's plenty of room for creativity, so let your inner artist out.
- Dress in black pants or jeans with a solid black or red top.
- Gather black construction paper, glue, scissors, and googly eyes—that's all you need for this costume.
- Follow a step-by-step tutorial to make a spider hat using those supplies.
- Wear all black clothing to complete the spider look.
- Get green and black makeup or face paint.
- Coat your face with green, then accentuate wrinkles with black: horizontal lines on your forehead, deeply around your eyes, an upside-down mustache between your bottom lip and chin, a diagonal wrinkle from the corner of your eye to your jawline, and another line from the tip of your nose down to your jaw.
- A black wig is nice but not necessary—if your face makeup is good, everyone will know who you are.
- Focus your makeup on your mouth, nose, and eyes—you can always erase and redo mistakes.
- Dress in all black so people focus on your face.
- Even without cat ears, people will recognize you as a cat.
- Wear your girliest dress or top—it doesn't matter much as long as your clothes don't distract from your doll face makeup.
- Choose a creepy, sweet, or scary doll face—there are many options.
- Focus on the mouth, cheeks, and eyes, and match your makeup to the clothes you plan to wear.
- For extra effect, wear colored contact lenses.
