Transform ordinary apples into spooky-sweet jack-o-lanterns with a simple orange candy coating and black fondant faces. These homemade treats are perfect for Halloween parties, but remember to slice before biting into the hard candy shell.
Ingredients
Directions
- Give each apple a good wash and dry them thoroughly.
- Insert a wooden caramel apple stick into the top of every apple, then set them aside.
- Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a heavy-bottom saucepan, mix together sugar, light corn syrup, water, and roughly three drops of orange food coloring.
- Heat the mixture over medium-high heat, stirring all the while, until it starts boiling and a candy thermometer reads 300°F.
- Grasping the stick, dip an apple into the orange candy and rotate it to cover every part. If the saucepan isn't deep enough, pour the hot candy into another bowl—be very careful because it's extremely hot.
- Allow any extra candy to drip back into the pan.
- Set the coated apple on the parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Do the same with the remaining apples.
- On a fresh piece of parchment, roll out the black fondant.
- With a knife, cut tiny fondant shapes for jack-o-lantern eyes and a mouth.
- Gently attach the fondant features to the candy apples to create a pumpkin face.
- Optionally, cut a 12-inch piece of curly ribbon and tie it around the top of each apple.
- Before eating, slice the apple because the candy shell is too hard to bite directly.
