You'll need
Directions
- Pick a round, fully ripe pumpkin with a smooth, firm surface, at least 20 cm tall, free of blemishes. Wash and dry it thoroughly.
- Cut a tapered lid from the top so it won't fall in. Remove the lid's pulp and fibers, then scoop out all seeds and stringy insides using a scraper or spoon, scraping the walls clean.
- Create your design on paper, or print a free stencil from online for a precise pattern.
- Tape the stencil to the pumpkin. Use an awl to poke along the lines, imprinting the design into the skin. Darken the areas you'll cut out with a marker for easier cutting.
- Carefully cut along the outlines using a reciprocating motion. For sharp corners, pull the knife out and reinsert at a new angle. Take your time to follow the lines closely.
- Add lighting: place a candle in a glass cup inside the pumpkin, leaving the lid off for ventilation, or use a flashlight, garland, or small lantern.
