Our own summary of the original by Gina Kleinworth — the full post and photos live at kleinworthco.com.
These ghoulish monster cupcakes start with a box mix and are topped with a creamy buttercream. A red gel glaze drips down the sides, and candy eyes are scattered randomly for a spooky look. Perfect for Halloween parties or any frightful occasion.

Directions
- Follow the box directions to mix, prepare, and bake the cupcakes.
- Allow cupcakes to cool completely on a wire rack while you prepare the frosting.
- In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together the softened butter and shortening until smooth.
- Mix in the vanilla extract.
- Add half of the confectioners' sugar and most of the milk; stir on low until moistened, then whip until fully combined.
- Add the remaining confectioners' sugar and milk.
- Beat on medium-high speed for 3–4 minutes, stopping occasionally to scrape the bowl sides.
- The frosting should be very smooth in texture.
- Fit a piping bag with a large open star tip and pipe the frosting in a swirl pattern onto each cupcake.
- Squeeze the red gel glaze icing over the tops, letting it drip down the sides.
- Randomly attach candy eyes all over the frosting.
